The Ohio Renaissance Festival is one of the largest open-air marketplaces in the state. Though the festival is located in Harveysburg, Ohio – it appears to be its own small village reminiscent of ancient times as small shops dot across the landscape featuring handmade crafts reflective of the Renaissance time period.
Not only are there strict regulations on the items to ensure their authenticity, but these arts and crafts are primarily made by master artisans and craftsmen from all over the United States. With such a varied array of artists, it’s no surprise that the marketplace of the Ohio Renaissance Festival consists of such an eclectic and motley mix of goods ranging from body armor to jewelry to candles and so much more!
But it’s not enough to have the crafts available – in some cases, the master craftsmen take things up a notch by demonstrating the lost art of their particular craft to the public. Glassblowing techniques have risen in popularity and it’s no surprise that crowds line up to see such craft making in action.
So, if you have a free weekend, check out the Ohio Renaissance Festival. It’s an annual event that takes place every fall and each weekend has its own theme. Sometimes, like last year, there was an entire weekend “marketplace” theme but, regardless, the shops are always hopping and the craftsmen are always eager to share their long standing traditions with the public!
